A Cookie History

Cookies began around 1400 years ago in Persia when sugar became available. They spread to Europe through the Muslim conquest of Spain and continued to increase in popularity due to their durability. The first ones were a mixture of nuts, sweetener and water, and were called ‘jumbles.’

Cookies sailed with the Pilgrims on the Mayflower, but the word cookie the English anglicized from the Dutch settlers who ate “koekjes.” The macaroon and gingerbread cookies were arguably the most popular until the 20th century when the chocolate chip was invented. The inventor was Ruth Graves Wakefield a native New Englander, who ran an actual toll house. Lacking a special ingredient one day, and thinking that the chocolate would spread throughout her batter, she chopped some semi-sweet chocolate and sprinkled it in her mix. The chocolate surprisingly held its shape and created a sensation as the Toll House Crunch Cookie.

Today, one of the most popular cookies is a gluten free snack. Wheat free cookies are a healthy alternative to the fatty and caloric flour based cookies that have predominated the cookie landscape over the years. Gluten free cookies are changing the cookie scene and are just as delicious as any of the others out there. So get your wheat free cookies today!
